Russian disappointment continued at the World Biathlon Championships on Saturday as the men failed to finish in the sprint medals.

Russian disappointment continued at the World Biathlon Championships on Saturday as the men failed to finish in the sprint medals.

Frenchman Martin Fourcade took gold at the event in Ruhpolding, Germany, finishing in 24 minutes 18.6 seconds while missing twice at the rifle range.

Emile Helge Svendsen of Norway won the silver 15.1 seconds behind and also with two misses, while Sweden's Carl Johan Bergman took the bronze 17.7 seconds back with perfect shooting.

Evgeny Garanichev was Russia's top finisher in 12th, clocking 1 minute 3.9 seconds behind; Anton Shipulin was a place and a further second back; Evgeny Ustyugov finished 1 minute 33 seconds back; and Andrei Makoveev was 1.42 off the leader.

Russia finished fifth in the mixed relay on Thursday, which was won by Norway, with Slovenia second and Germany third, following a controversial finish involving a malfunctioning target and unexpected time penalties.
