Russian mixed martial arts fighter Fedor Emelianenko caused a career-threatening brain injury to Japan's Satoshi Ishii in their New Year's Eve fight in Tokyo, Japanese newspaper Cyzo has reported.

The 25-year-old Japanese fighter sustained cerebral edema when he was knocked out in the first round of the bout with the Russian, Cyzo reported this week.

While the injury is not life-threatening, doctors have warned Ishii, who won a gold medal in judo in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, that he should not fight again, the newspaper said.

Emelianenko, 35, is a multiple world champion and went undefeated for almost a decade until June 2010, becoming a well-known Russian celebrity in the process.

He gained broader fame following a bout with American fighter Jeff Monson in Moscow in November 2011, after which Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin appeared to be booed by sections of the crowd during a post-fight speech.
