Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka was confirmed Monday as the world's No. 1 player by the WTA, which published its latest rankings list on Monday.

The 22-year-old Belarusian, who steamrolled Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-0 in Saturday's final, unseats Caroline Wozniacki from the top spot, where the Dane had been for 67 weeks.

Wozniacki lost to defending champion Kim Clijsters in the Melbourne quarterfinals and drops to No. 4.

Sharapova's impressive charge to the final saw her move up a spot to third, while her semifinalist Petra Kvitova stays in second.

U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur, a shock first-round loser to Romania's Sorana Cirstea, completes the top five.
