Russian hockey star Alex Ovechkin faces an NHL disciplinary hearing on Monday after hitting an opposition player's head during a game on Sunday.

Four minutes into the second period of the game between Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ovechkin left the ground and appeared to charge into Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek with his shoulder.

Observers say Ovechkin, a 2009 league MVP and five-time All-Star player, could get a one- or two-game ban.

"I was a little surprised,” Michalek told the Washington Examiner. “To me, when the play happened, [Ovechkin] just went for my head. I've been told that he left his feet. Hit my head. To me, it's a definitely a penalty. They didn't call it. It should have been called for sure."

Washington lost the game 4-3 in overtime, with Ovechkin scoring one goal and recording three assists.

Ovechkin has a record of disciplinary problems, and was suspended for a total of four games in the 2008-09 season for two separate hits on opposition players. In one of the incidents, Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell received a broken collarbone.
