Finland won the first-ever hockey gold medal at the Youth Winter Olympics on Sunday, edging Russia 2-1 in a thrilling shootout final.
Manku Honkanen scored the deciding shootout goal, sending the Finns, who also beat Russia in group play, into wild celebrations.
The teams were sent into overtime unable to add to regulation goals from Russia's Igor Zvinovyev, who opened the scoring nine minutes in, and Waltteri Hopponen, who leveled with two minutes remaining.
Canada beat the U.S. 7-5 in Saturday's bronze medal match. Russia had beaten the Americans 5-2 in the semifinal.
The Games opened last Friday in Innsbruck, bringing together a thousand 14- to 18-year-old athletes from 70 nations to the Tyrolean capital.
The competition ends Sunday.
It follows the inaugural Summer Youth Games in Singapore in 2010, and medals are up for grabs in seven sports: biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, figure skating and alpine skiing.
