Russian Formula One racer Vitaly Petrov travelled to Santa Corona, Italy, on Monday to visit his teammate Robert Kubica in hospital.

The 26-year-old Polish racer suffered multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand when he crashed his Skoda Fabia during the Ronde di Andora Rally in Italy on Sunday.

"I was shocked by the news about the accident and immediately decided to visit my teammate as soon as the doctors allowed it," Petrov said. "I am sure Robert's strong character will help him recover quickly."

Doctors say it will be a long time before Kubica recovers from the crash and he is likely to miss part or even the whole Formula One season this year.

Petrov's spokeswoman declined to comment on whether Petrov's status in the team would change because of Kubicas's crash.

"I believe it is senseless to discuss Vitaly's status in Renault because there is no such thing as 'first pilot' and 'second pilot,'" she said. "They are both pilots on one team and there is no division."

Petrov, 26, is the first and currently the only Russian Formula One racer. He debuted in 2010 with moderate success, finishing the season 13th in the overall standings, compared to Kubica's eighth place.
