MOSCOW, December 20 (R-Sport) – Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has held talks with Evgeni Malkin's lockout team Metallurg Magnitogorsk, the Russian has said.
Metallurg captain Malkin, who scored his first KHL hat-trick on Wednesday in a 5-3 road win over Atlant Moscow Region, confirmed negotiations between Crosby’s agent and and the team's general manager Gennady Velichkin had taken place.
“I heard that [Crosby's] agent called Velichkin, that’s why there is such talk,” Malkin said.
“But you should understand that Crosby has huge insurance costs, so I don’t know how he will settle these matters.”
As the possibility of an entire NHL season cancellation grows, speculation has swirled that Crosby may gave into the need for top-class ice time and fly to Europe, with Russia or Switzerland his most likely destinations.
Malkin, the KHL's second-top scorer this season, added that he was longing to play alongside Crosby once again.
“Crosby is the best player in the world, that’s why I miss playing with such a teammate,” Malkin said.
“It is a pleasure to play in the same team as him, moreover, in one line. I miss not only him, but also Pittsburg, which has become my second hometown.”
Metallurg, which stands fourth in the Eastern Conference, has four Canadians in the roster, recently signing Colorado Avalanche forward Ryan O’Reilly for two years.
