Former Liverpool assistant coach Alex Miller has left his post as head coach of Russian second-tier football club Sibir Novosibirsk by mutual consent after just nine games in charge, the club said Friday.

Sibir lost five games under Miller, winning just one, and are seventh in the Football National League. Novosibirsk city mayor Vladimir Gorodetsky setting a goal of promotion to the Russian Premier League last month.

Miller’s last game in charge was a 2-1 defeat Thursday to promotion-chasing Alania, who were relegated alongside Sibir last season.

“Unfortunately it turned out that Sibir’s results and style of play at the current time do not allow us to look to the future with optimism,” the club said in a website statement Friday.

“In this situation we have agreed with Alex Miller to end his contract.”

Miller’s assistant, former Sunderland midfielder Dariusz Kubicki, will take charge of training Friday, the club said.

When Miller took over in January, Sibir were 12 points off the automatic promotion places, a margin that has now stretched to 23 points. The harsh Siberian winter forced Miller’s team to play their first game of his tenure in an indoor sports hall.

His three-month reign at Sibir caps a series of short coaching spells abroad since leaving Liverpool in 2008, with 14 months in charge of Japan’s JEF United and four months at AIK in Sweden.

As a player, Miller was part of the Rangers squad that won the 1972 Cup Winners’ Cup and he was on the touchline when Liverpool lifted the 2005 Champions League title.
