WASHINGTON, October 24 (RIA Novosti) – Every New Yorker should get a flu shot not to mislead or distract New York healthcare workers from fighting the Ebola virus, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press-conference Friday.

"When you have flu it can seem like some of the same symptom as Ebola. Every New Yorker who gets a flu shot helps our medical teams to not have to deal with something that may falsely indicate Ebola," said de Blasio.

New York Mayor stressed that city authorities want to make sure that New York medical professionals can focus on the Ebola crisis properly.

"They don't need to have these false reports or misleading dynamics clogging up their effort," he said.

New York City is the most densely populated major city in the United States.

On Thursday, Craig Spencer, a member of Doctors Without Borders, who volunteered in Guinea and returned to the United States on October 17 tested positive for Ebola. He was immediately rushed to Bellevue Hospital in New York City.

According to the most recent estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), 4,877 people have died from the disease, with 9,936 confirmed, probable and suspected Ebola cases.
