MOSCOW, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - The American doctor, who was earlier hospitalized for possible Ebola contraction, has tested positive for the virus, The New York Times reported.

Craig Spencer, 33, was taken to New York City's Bellevue Hospital after showing Ebola-type symptoms.

He is a physician with Doctors Without Borders and was taking care of Ebola patients in Guinea before he returned to New York 10 days ago.

The Health Department of New York City earlier issued a statement saying that it was actively tracing the contacts of the patient.

The current Ebola epidemic, one of the current global security issues, started in southern Guinea at the end of 2013 and later spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal, with several Ebola cases also having been reported in the United States and Europe.

According to the most recent estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), 4,555 people have died from the disease, with 9,216 confirmed, probable and suspected Ebola cases.
