MOSCOW, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - Two British citizens wrongly detained in Turkey on their way from Iran to the United Kingdom have been awarded 13,500 euros ($17,100) by European human rights judges, the Council of Europe said Wednesday.
"The European Court of Human Rights' 21 October decision in the case T. and A. v. Turkey (no. 47146/11), followed a complaint from Ms S.T. and Mr K.A., who live in Sheffield (the United Kingdom)," a statement on the council's official website said, adding that the applicants have been awarded "EUR 10,000 (non-pecuniary damage), and EUR 3,500 (costs and expenses) to S.T."
According to the document, two British travelers, one of them at the time a minor, have been detained in Istanbul for four and two days respectively in November 2010 – one on suspicion of holding a false passport and the other of being an accomplice to false identity.
"The applicants complained that they had been unlawfully detained without the opportunity to challenge the lawfulness of their detention; that they had not been duly informed of the reasons for their detention; and that they had had no right to compensation in respect of these complaints," the statement said, adding that one of the travelers also complained about the poor conditions of her detention.
