MOSCOW, September 22 (RIA Novosti) – American actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt may play the role of famous NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone's next film, called "The Snowden Files," Variety magazine reported.

Though negotiations are pending, Gordon-Levitt is said to have already given his consent to star in the film, the magazine said Sunday.

"The Snowden Files" is based on two books, "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man" by Guardian journalist Luke Harding and "Time of the Octopus" by Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden's lawyer in Russia.

The biopic is scheduled to begin production late this year or in early 2015.

The film could face competition from another project based on the book "No Place to Hide" by Glenn Greenwald, the journalist Snowden leaked classified documents to in June of 2013. The film by Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, famous for producing the James Bond films, will most likely enter cinemas after Stone's movie.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an actor famous for his roles in (500) Days of Summer, The Dark Knight Rises, and Looper. The 33-year old made his directorial debut in the 2013 film Don Jon in which he starred as the main character.

The American film maker, Oliver Stone is a three-time Oscar winner known for his mastery of controversial topics. His most well-known works include Platoon, JFK, Natural Born Killers, and Any Given Sunday.

Snowden became famous in June 2013 after leaking classified information from the NSA to journalists Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras in Hong Kong. The information launched a fury of controversy after exposing mass government surveillance conducted by the United States against almost every country in the world.

The former NSA employee was charged with two counts of violating the Espionage Act and theft of government property by the US Department of Justice on June 14. On August 1, 2013, Russian authorities granted Snowden temporary asylum, later issuing the former NSA contractor a three-year residency permit. Although Snowden is currently residing in Russia he could face 30 years in prison should he return to the United States.
