MOSCOW, September 20 (RIA Novosti) - The government of Sierra Leone has imposed a three-day lockdown in order to raise awareness of the Ebola virus, reads the statement of SL President Ernest Bai Koroma published on the country's government's website Thursday.

"… it is very important that everybody must know what they can do to avoid getting the disease and prevent others from getting the disease. My Government has declared a three-day stay at home," the statement said.

The "Ose to Ose Ebola Tok" campaign was put into action on September 19 and will last through September 21. As part of the campaign, 7136 trained teams comprising health workers, volunteers and NGO representatives will visit households throughout the country to provide them with information about the virus.

Those who used to pray outside will have to do so at home for the duration of the government-imposed stay.

It is estimated that approximately six million people will see themselves locked behind their doors due to the lockdown.

The worst Ebola epidemic in history began in southern Guinea at the end of 2013 and soon spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. The death toll is estimated to be above 2,400. There is no officially approved medication for the Ebola virus, and experts claim prevention is the only cure. Several countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan, are currently working on vaccines.
