MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) – The start of a new school year in Colorado has also marked the outbreak of a severe and unusual respiratory disease, which particularly affects children, Diabetes Insider reported Monday.

Children’s Hospital Colorado officials stated some 900 children have been treated for the illness over the past three weeks. States including Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Oklahoma, North Carolina and Georgia have all reported similar outbreaks of the illness.

Health officials claim the illness is linked to the rare human enterovirus 68 (HEV68), while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes the sickness to be related to human rhinovirus, HRV, or the common cold.

HEV 68 symptoms include sneezing, coughing, and body aches which can develop in to severe breathing difficulties. For some children, the respiratory effects could be fatal, especially in those who already suffer from preexisting breathing conditions like asthma.

There have been no reported deaths related to the outbreak so far. Health officials recommend taking preventative measures such as washing hands and keeping a safe distance from infected individuals.
