MOSCOW, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - The number of reported cases and deaths resulting from Ebola deadly virus has been underestimated due to the so-called “shadow zones” the World Health Organization reported Friday.

These “shadow zones” are areas or in homes where infected persons are kept hidden from health officials. The reason being that “As Ebola has no cure, some believe infected loved ones will be more comfortable dying at home,” the WHO said.

These “shadow zones” are a problem because they “cannot be investigated because of community resistance or lack of adequate staff and vehicles,” according to the WHO.

So far, 1,427 people have died and 2,615 have been infected with the virus in West Africa since its outbreak in March, according to the WHO’s website. The virus is transferred by contact with the infected, either by blood or other bodily fluids. The virus is extremely deadly, with a fatality rate of up to 90 percent. A number of companies in the United States, Japan and Canada have been working on an Ebola vaccine, however, there is no known cure yet.
