MOSCOW, August 17 (RIA Novosti) – At least 40 FBI agents have arrived to the city of Ferguson, Missouri to conduct an investigation into the killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a police officer, Missouri Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson announced.

According to Johnson, the agents are already questioning all those who could be eyewitnesses to the killing and searching for any evidence related to the case.

Earlier on Saturday, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon imposed a state of emergency and declared a curfew in Ferguson amid ongoing protests in the city following the shooting.

On August 10, a police officer shot dead Michael Brown, an 18-year-old black man. The incident spurred a week of mass protests in Ferguson, as well as in a number of other cities across the country; several people were injured in clashes with police that used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the angry crowd.

About a week later, local police identified the police officer who shot Brown as Darren Wilson. It was also revealed that the teenager was suspected in a convenience-store theft. At a press conference earlier this week, authorities, however, said the officer was not aware of the fact at the time. According to the city's police chief, Brown was stopped because he was “walking down the middle of the street blocking traffic.”

Attorney General Eric Holder said earlier this week, that the Justice Department had offered local authorities “technical assistance” to help improve a response to the angry protests, “without relying on unnecessarily extreme displays of force.” Holder pledged a thorough and fair investigation into the incident.

US President Barack Obama earlier ordered the FBI and the Department of Justice to join the probe.
