MOSCOW, August 9 (RIA Novosti) – Japan’s Nagasaki on Saturday marks 69 years since the atomic bomb attack on the city by the United States.

The annual morning ceremony for the victims of the tragedy is planned to take place in the city's Peace Park. The representatives of 50 countries, including world’s nuclear powers such as Russia, China, UK, France and the United States, are expected to attend.

Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue is expected to address a speech to the Japanese government urging it to push for the elimination of nuclear weapons and the speedy recovery of the areas affected by the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in 2011.

The US atomic bomb “Fat Man” hit Nagasaki early on August 9, 1945, three days after the first ever bomb of the type detonated in Hiroshima. Six days later Japan surrendered, marking the end of the World War II. Nearly 74,000 people died in Nagasaki as a result of the attack by the end of 1945.
