MOSCOW, July 23 (RIA Novosti) - An American teenager, 19-year-old Matthew Lane Durham was charged with sexually abusing Kenyan children, the Washington Post reported.

According to the court documents cited by the Washington Post, Durham went to Kenya in spring on a volunteering trip. While staying at home for neglected children in Nairobi he raped boys and girls in the facility.

There were 10 victims between 4 and 9 years old.

The probable cause affidavit, issued by the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma states that Durham confessed and gave detailed statements of all allegations.

Durham’s attorney, Stephen Jones claims that the affidavit is inaccurate.

“I don’t believe that any of the people at the so-called orphanage actually witnessed any of these things…They told him that they were not going to let him leave the country until he confessed,” the Washington Post cited Jones as saying.

Durham was arrested on July 17, and appeared before a United States Magistrate Judge in Oklahoma City late last Friday afternoon.

The next hearing is scheduled for August 1, the FBI official website reports.

If convicted, Durham will face a life sentence.

According to ChildHelp organization, the United States have one of the worst records of child abuse among industrialized nations.

The National Center for Victims and Crime reports shocking figures, stating that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys in the United States are victims of sexual abuse.
