Thousands of people gathered at a zoo in Japan’s western Wakayama Prefecture to take a look at a baby giant panda, which was born on August 10, NHK television channel reported on Saturday.

The female baby panda, which made its first public appearance on Saturday, was born to 11-year-old Rauhin and the 19-year-old male Eimei at the Adventure World Zoo. It weighs 343 grams and is 25 centimeters tall.

This is the second baby giant panda born in Japan this year. The previous cub was born at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo on July 5, but to the all-nation disappointment was found dead on July 11.

A giant panda is an unofficial symbol of China and its current population is estimated at 1,600 worldwide. There are only 30 giant pandas living in zoos outside China, namely in Austria, Australia, the United States, Thailand and Japan.
