A Moscow court slapped opposition activist and firebrand nationalist Eduard Limonov with a 12,000-ruble ($380) fine on Thursday for his part in organizing an unsanctioned protest in downtown Moscow on July 31.

The punishment was imposed in line with new legislation introduced in June which significantly raises fines for participating in and organizing unsanctioned public protests.

Limonov, founder of the National Bolshevik party and leader of the Other Russia coalition, plays a key role in the Strategy 31 protests, which support the 31st article of the Russian Constitution guaranteeing the freedom of assembly. They take place on the 31st day of each month on Triumfalnaya Square in Moscow.

Limonov told reporters he plans to appeal the court’s decision.
