More than 70 percent of Russians want stricter migration policies, echoing the views recently voiced by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, according to a survey conducted by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM).

More than 70 percent of Russians want stricter migration policies, echoing the views recently voiced by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, according to a survey conducted by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM).

Seventy-nine percent support measures to prevent the appearance of closed enclaves that live “not by the law but by one's notions of the law,” according to the survey.

Stricter migration laws and criminal liability for violations have the support of 77 percent and 75 percent respectively.

The percentage of Russians who support introduction of exams on Russia's language, history and literature was slightly lower at 67 percent.

VTsIOM surveyed 1,600 people in 46 regions on January 28-29. The margin of error is 3-4 percent.
