Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has signed a law raising the parliamentary election barrier from 3% to 5%, the presidential press service said on Thursday.
The law was drafted with the participation of Ukrainian and international experts and meets international standards of democracy, presidential chief of staff Serhiy Lyovochkin said.
“The president of Ukraine believes that the next parliamentary election, which will be held in accordance with this law, will be democratic,” Lyovochkin said.
The new law also bans political blocs from running.
The next parliamentary election in Ukraine is to be held in the fall of 2012.
