Sixty Chinese workers took to the streets of the Siberian capital of Novosibirsk on Tuesday in a protest over wage arrears, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported on Wednesday.

The protesters carried banners in Chinese saying “Give me my wages, I want to go home.” The paper said the demonstrators worked for a Chinese construction company which had delayed paying their wages.

One of the demonstrators was fined 1,000 rubles ($30) for organizing the unsanctioned protest, Novosibirsk’s court department spokeswoman Mariana Glushkova told Komsomolskaya Pravda. “The meeting was not sanctioned,” she said.

Many Chinese workers come to neighboring eastern Russia to earn money, but they are often poorly paid and exploited.

The Russian authorities have expressed concern over the number of Chinese people settling down in sparsely populated eastern Russia, which they see as a demographic and territorial threat.
