Russia has been ranked one of the least charitable nations, a Charities Aid Foundation report was cited as saying by a business daily on Friday.

Russia came 138th out of 153 countries ranked in the Charities Aid Foundation World Giving Report 2010 according to the charities that people donate money to, their volunteer activity and providing help to the homeless.

Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, Switzerland and the United States are the most charitable states, Vedomosti said, citing the report.

The paper said the main reasons for such low charitable activity standards in Russia are low living standards and a general dissatisfaction with life. Many people in Russia are also deeply suspicious of charities, believing that the money will be siphoned off before it reaches its intended recipients.

The report also said only 6% of Russians regularly donate money. People are more motivated to invest time (20 %) or help a stranger in dire straits (29%).
