MOSCOW, January 21 (RIA Novosti) – American military assets have been offered to bolster security for the upcoming Sochi Olympic Games scheduled to open in less than three weeks, the Pentagon said Monday.
“Air and naval assets, to include two Navy ships in the Black Sea, will be available if requested,” press secretary Rear Admiral John F. Kirby said in a statement.
US commanders in the region are preparing for that eventuality, he added.
The announcement came as US lawmakers voiced concern over the safety of Americans attending the Games following twin bombing attacks that killed 34 people in the Russian city of Volgograd late last month.
On Monday an Islamic insurgent group with ties to Iraq claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Representative Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said from Moscow that he planned to inspect the security preparations in Sochi, the Associated Press reported Sunday.
The State Department has advised US travelers on its website to remain vigilant as the Olympic Games are a prime target for terrorists, while noting Russian officials have said they are taking “appropriate measures” in providing security.
Volgograd is considered a gateway to Russia’s southern republics of Chechnya and Dagestan, which have been the center of an ongoing Islamic insurgency for the past two decades.
Sochi lies about 200 miles (320 kilometers) from Chechnya and 300 miles (480 kilometers) from Dagestan.
Chechnya’s Kremlin-backed leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, said last week that new information confirms that Doku Umarov, a prominent local warlord who had vowed to attack the Olympics, had died.
That conclusion is questioned by experts and was based on an intercepted discussion between two militants who mentioned his death.
Dagestan sees almost daily outbreaks of violence. On Friday a bomb and grenade attack at a restaurant in the republic’s capital left five wounded. Ten militants were killed in a series of shootouts with law enforcement officers in the days following the attack.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev – who along with his brother Dzhokhar killed three and injured over 200 in a bombing at the Boston Marathon last April – spent several months in Dagestan in 2012, according to authorities, and had ties to local radical Islamic groups.

- Mikhail1228Would never be allowed!!16:48, 21/01/2014American forces on Russian soil would never be allowed. Russia doesn't need American warships prowling its coast it has plenty of its own warships!
- mrgenieArrogance has been the mother of many mistakes..18:22, 21/01/2014Many mistakes have been made by both Russia and the west when it comes to fighting terrorism. To claim Russia has "plenty" warships to evacuate foreign nationals in case of terrorist attacks is one of those arrogant statements which comes from both Russian and non Russian sides.
Maybe we should stop making such statements which one can expect from 10 y.o. undereducated children and instead cooperate on the field of fighting terrorism.
Up to this date, thousands of Russian civilians have died from Terrorism. Tens of thousands of Russian soldiers have died fighting terrorism. Claiming Russia can handle the problems of the world itself is simply put: stupid.
Even the Americans, who undoubtedly have worldwide 100 times more military presence then Russia, even the Chinese who have a much larger industrial base and military base then Russia, even those mighty states claim: "It's impossible for us alone to handle terrorism, we need worldwide cooperation."
Even President Putin, who is known for his national-socialism, claims the world needs to be united in fighting terrorism and no country alone can stem it.
Yet here you come saying statements from president Putin are dumb statements and he has no idea and his military staff who claims Russia alone can't combat terrorism, but you know it all better.. The might of the Russian navy will be able to hold back terrorism.
Yup, you know it all better.
Please, tell it the people in Moscow who lost relatives, children, wives and Husbands in the bombing attacks on buildings.
Tell it the people in Moscow who lost their dearest ones in metro attacks. Tell it the people in Beslan. Tell it those parents, cousins, grandparents and children in Caucasus region. Tell it the people who lost their beloved ones in the busses.
YOu go and tell them that the might of the Russia navy is so utterly powerful, no terrorist can ever strike Russia.
You go tell that on public on TV as you do here online, that the might of the Russian navy will make sure nothing ever happens to Russians and all those previous terror attacks never happened, because how could those attacks happen, the might of the Russian navy makes it impossible. It's all a lie by Putin, he lied about everything.
You go tell that to the world, everything about terrorism is a lie, because of the might of the Russian navy.
Good luck finding 1 person who's so stupid to believe Putin is lying about every single terror attacks against Russia and everything is a huge lie.
Thank god Putin is way smarter and he actually TRIES to handle it as good as possible. Knowing that the might of the Russian navy is very small and weak and thus knowing he can't stop terrorism in Russia.
Maybe you go for presidency, since you know it all better.

As stated in the article, they are already there:
‘Air and naval assets, to include two Navy ships in the Black Sea, will be available if requested’
The 1936 Montreux Convention ALLOWS the passage of Non-Black Sea state warships that do not exceed a total 30,000-ton weight restriction, within the agreement, into the Black Sea for a period no longer than twenty-one days.
Therefore, the Americans and/or any other Naval power with vessels that meet the agreement can navigate the Black Sea waters of Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia or Turkey, if they observe lawful international protocols.
If you were not such a reactionary blue-haired twit, like your fellow conspiracists, you would know this, LOL!

Ukraine has not preserved its 1991 borders. The signing of the Geneva memorandum on April 17 reaffirmed the willingness of Russia, the United States and EU countries to reach a compromise. While the sides continue to trade tough talk and symbolic sanctions, the Kremlin and the White House are also holding a parallel dialogue on the coordinated geopolitical revision of Eastern Europe.
