MOSCOW, October 7 (RIA Novosti) – More than 50,000 people attended events across Moscow on Sunday to mark the arrival of the Olympic Flame to Russia, Moscow police department said.

“Over 5,500 people attended a ceremony with the participation of the Russian president to light the Olympic flame on the Red Square,” police said.

In total, over 50,000 people attended various related events in Moscow.

“No incidents were reported,” police said.

The flame, originally lit at a traditional ceremony in Ancient Olympia, landed from Greece at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport earlier Sunday and was transported to the heart of the capital.

Dressed in a long black coat, Russian President Vladimir Putin entered through an avenue of flags of Russia's 83 regions, walked along a red carpet and up an enormous stage erected specially on Red Square before taking a lit torch from an assistant and setting light to the cauldron.

The Olympic flame will remain in Moscow on October 6-9 before setting for the longest torch relay in history, a 123-day marathon across nine time zones.

A total of 12,000 police, troops and volunteers will maintain security during the events in the Russian capital.
