STAR CITY (Moscow region), October 18 (RIA Novosti)
The service life of the International Space Station (ISS) may be extended until 2028, a Russian space official said on Tuesday.
The service life of the ISS ends in 2015 but participants of the project - Canada, the European Union, Japan, Russia and the United States – have recently agreed to extend its operation until at least 2020.
“At present, experts have been instructed to find ways to extend the station’s service life until 2028,” Alexei Krasnov, the head of Roscosmos manned spaceflight programs, told the participants of the Space Forum 2011.
The orbital station could be used as an assembly line and a launch pad for experimental spacecraft, including small satellites, he said.
“These are going to be small-size satellites, but we will be able to launch them from the ISS to a variety of orbits,” Krasnov said.
NASA earlier called the ISS “an anchor for the future of human space exploration” and a major component of the U.S. human space program.

- firstname.lastname@example.orgI agree the ISS should operate until 202817:28, 20/10/2011I firmly believe that the ISS should be extended until the year 2028. On June 12, 2009 while taking CalTrains to San Francisco I had a very unusual premonition of an asteroid strike on US soil on August 17, 2028. The area of this strike is near Yellowstone National Park. The asteroid impact destabalizes the Yellowstone Super Caldera causing it to erupt. The subsequent asteroid impact and volcanic eruption wipe out life on the North American continent and reduce the human population to 1 billion. Yes it was a dramatic premonition and alarmed me because my premonitions tend to come true. Strange but true. This asteroid if it is coming is to be spotted around April 16, 2024. Impact site confirmation in 2026. And the impact date is August 17, 2028. This premonition has NO BASIS yet in confirmed astronomical observations. The American, Canadian and Russian governments have been notified along with the Small Planet Observatory (whose job it is to look for near earth objects). The ISS can be a valuable space observation platform in this endevour and others. Having spent so much money on ISS I would really like to see it stay in orbit until 2028 if this is feasible.
If economics are an issue, I would suggest moving to a "Work Credit" based financial system that would provide all of the income to maintain the ISS in orbit.

Ukraine has not preserved its 1991 borders. The signing of the Geneva memorandum on April 17 reaffirmed the willingness of Russia, the United States and EU countries to reach a compromise. While the sides continue to trade tough talk and symbolic sanctions, the Kremlin and the White House are also holding a parallel dialogue on the coordinated geopolitical revision of Eastern Europe.
