MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) – A 15-year-old school student in Russia’s Saratov area, allegedly shot herself on Monday, after her mother returned from a parent-teacher meeting discussing students’ progress in studies, the Investigative Committee of Russia reported Tuesday.

According to local news website Balashover, the girl shot herself with an old Izh-16 hunting shotgun that belonged to her late grandfather.
FreeNews-Volga reports that the girl shot herself after her mother demanded that the girl does her homework. The teenager left the house, locked herself in a nearby shed, and fired.

The regional office of the Investigative Committee commented that whenever a legal minor commits suicide, a criminal proceeding is initiated to comprehensively examine the case and establish all circumstances surrounding it.

Locals commented on the incident saying that “parents ought to be more careful with their words and expressions. Many children and adolescents today perceive criticism terribly and think that if they were scolded . . . to them it means that no one respects or loves them.” Others reflected the attitude that stricter parenting could have prevented the suicide.

The Investigative Committee reported on Thursday that a 15-year-old boy had killed himself in Russia’s Sverdlovsk area. According the press release, he was from a wealthy family and was at home with his mother and grandmother at the time. According to UNICEF, Russia has the world’s third-highest teenage suicide rate, with 90 percent of cases linked to conflicts in the family such as alcoholism or domestic violence. UNICEF also states that there is almost always more than one reason that leads to teenage suicide.
