MOSCOW, October 10 (RIA Novosti) – In an address to national legislatures and international organizations, the State Duma, the Russian parliament's lower chamber, called Friday for an international investigation of crimes against civilians committed in southeastern Ukraine.

The Duma called on foreign lawmakers, the international community and international organizations, such as the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe, to hold independent international investigations into the events that led to numerous deaths of civilians in the war-torn region and to punish those guilty of crimes against Ukrainians.

Earlier on Wednesday, the United Nations issued a report on the situation in Ukraine, saying that Kiev-controlled forces continue to violate the principles of international humanitarian law. The report covers the period from August 18 to September 16 and contains testimonial evidence of humanitarian rights violations by Ukrainian military units, especially by the Aydar, Dnipro-1, Kyiv-1 and Kyiv-2 battalions that were integrated into Ukraine's National Guard and continue their operations in the southeast of the country despite the ceasefire agreed by the Contact Group on September 5 in Minsk.

In mid-April, the Ukrainian government launched a military operation in eastern Ukraine in an attempt to suppress independence supporters in the country's eastern regions, which according to the United Nations, has claimed the lives of more than 3,600 people and left over 8,700 injured.
