MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - Six of the best young scientists in the field of green chemistry, will be awarded with grants during an upcoming international symposium, "Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development", taking place in Moscow September 22-23, Russian company PhosAgro, one of the organizers of the event, reported.

Green chemistry is a scientific field aimed to minimize the harm of chemical production processes and chemical products to mankind and the environment.

This is a project of UNESCO’s and PhosAgro’s "Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development" that runs jointly with The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). It was started in Spring of 2013.

The goal of the project is to increase uses for green chemistry technologies and enact principles for maintaining global sustainable development. The initiative is being implemented with support of Russian Foreign Ministry and Commission of Russian Federation for UNESCO. For the first time in the history of UNESCO, the entire UN project is being funded privately, by a Russian company.

The scope of the project’s financial support is providing for many young scientists from all over the world to work on development and utilization of advanced chemical technologies. They hope to solve the problems in the fields of nature-protection, healthcare, food and use of natural resources. An international scientific jury has been formed under the aegis of UNESCO and IUPAC. It consists of many prominent scientists, teachers and chemists. It has examined 110 applications from young scientists from all over the world.

The President of Russian Academy of Sciences, the vice-chairman of Commission of Russian Federation for UNESCO Vladimir Fortov, vice-chairman of Russian Foreign Ministry Department for International Organizations, executive secretary of Commission of Russian Federation for UNESCO Grigoriy Ordzhonikidze, director of UNESCO's Division for Basic and Engineering Sciences Maciej Nalecz, a member of the executive committee of The International Council for Science, the financial director of IUPAC professor John Corish  all will take part in the symposium.
