MOSCOW, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - Yevgeny Mikhailov, the head of Russia’s above-ground transit network, MosGorTrans, said today, September 18, that negotiations are taking place with an IT infrastructure company to equip Moscow’s buses, trolleybuses and streetcars with Wi-Fi. Mikhailov has said that Moscow’s above-ground public transit network will feature free Wi-Fi by 2015, Russian news service Moskva reported.

Moscow’s entire public transit network will be equipped with Wi-Fi transmitters, including all 12 lines of Moscow’s underground Metro system. Many Metro trains already feature free Wi-Fi access. Last year, Moscow Metro awarded sole bidder Maxima Telecom a contract to provide Wi-Fi throughout its network. Maxima’s Cisco Systems hardware and Radwin FiberinMotionT train-to-track wireless broadband technology provide 90 Mbps Wi-Fi access.

MosGorTrans has been experimenting with the technology on about 100 buses since last year, and Moscow’s metro began doing so in late 2012.
