MOSCOW, September 7 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated the workers and veterans of the oil and gas sector on their professional holiday, stressing that the development of the Arctic shelf is one of the critical challenges facing the industry, according to a statement on the website of the Kremlin.

"Today, the oil and gas industry workers face a number of important tasks. Among them are the diversification of export flows, the development of new promising fields, the creation of modern clusters for processing and transportation of raw materials, the large-scale programs of the Arctic shelf development, the introduction of high-tech equipment and high environmental standards," Putin said in a statement.

The president also said that the fuel and energy complex is one of the most important sectors of the Russian economy. This was made possible due to several generations of scientists, geologists, builders, drillers and transport workers, whose work provided Russia with a leading position in the global energy markets.
