Moscow hopes that economic pragmatism will guide political decisions taken by the West, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday after announcing a sweeping ban on food imports from countries that sanctioned Russia.

MOSCOW, August 7 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow hopes that economic pragmatism will guide political decisions taken by the West, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday after announcing a sweeping ban on food imports from countries that sanctioned Russia.

“I sincerely hope that the economic pragmatism of our Western partners will prevail over ridiculous political ideas and they would start thinking instead of threatening and restricting Russia. And mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation will be restored in previous volumes, we are looking forward to it,” the Russian prime minister said.

On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin singed an order on economic measures to protect the country's security. The decree banned for a year imports of agricultural and food products from countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia.

The complete “blacklist” of food imports from Australia, Canada, the European Union, the United States and Norway was announced Thursday. The list includes meat, poultry, fish, milk, dairy products, as well as fruits and vegetables. The embargo does not include infant foods and products. Moscow is ready to review the terms of these restrictions if its Western partners demonstrate behaviors constructive to cooperation.

The European Union, the United States and some other countries have compiled sanctions lists against Russian companies, banks, politicians, as well as the financial, energy and defense sectors of the Russian economy. The move has been linked to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly called the measures counterproductive and stressed that Russia was never involved in the Ukrainian conflict.
