Russian President Vladimir Putin promised Tuesday to help in evacuating children, who require urgent medical assistance, from violence-hit eastern Ukraine.

NOVO-OGARYOVO, July 29 (RIA Novosti) – Russian President Vladimir Putin promised Tuesday to help in evacuating children, who require urgent medical assistance, from violence-hit eastern Ukraine.

The head of the presidential human rights council, Mikhail Fedotov, told Putin at a meeting that the Kiev government keeps silent on Russia’s offer to evacuate the children.

“I expect that we will be able to agree with human rights activists and Ukrainian authorities,” Putin said. “We will try to help.”

The Russian leader added: “This is an important humanitarian sphere and I would ask you to seek the response of the Ukrainian colleagues in a non-conflict manner.”

The Russian president reminded Fedotov that the Russian side is already providing medical assistance to Ukrainian soldiers having secured the agreement of the Ukrainian authorities.

Over the past days, 26 Ukrainian servicemen were hospitalized in Russia’s Rostov Region. Two of them, who were in a critical condition, later died and another 18 were discharged and sent back to Ukraine.

Putin has also called on authorities to resolve major issues on providing assistance to Ukrainian refugees.

According to the Russian Federal Migration Service, more than 500,000 refugees from Ukraine have entered Russia since April.

Citizens from 66 Russian regions are currently sheltering Ukrainian refugees, and some 233,000 of these refugees already have an official status, Russian children’s rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said Tuesday.

Moscow has described the ongoing military action as a punitive operation and has repeatedly called on Kiev to put an immediate end to the bloodshed. Russia’s Foreign Ministry has also urged the international community to intervene and investigate the crimes against humanity that have occurred in Ukraine in recent months.

According to the UN report, the conflict has claimed the lives of 1,129 civilians since mid-April till July 26, and 3,442 civilians were injured.
