MOSCOW, July 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russians are well-aware of Ukraine’s shelling of their territories but are against sending troops to Ukraine, a poll released Tuesday by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) revealed.

According to the poll, 47 percent of Russians are aware that Russian territory was shelled by Ukraine, causing the death of a Russian citizen, while another 40 percent “have heard something about it” and only 13 percent have not heard about it at all.

When asked how Russia should reply to Ukraine’s shelling, the majority of those questioned, or 63 percent, chose to use the means of diplomacy. Twenty-two percent suggested that Russia reply with surgical strikes on the territories from which the attacks came. Only 11 percent believed that Russia should send its troops into Ukraine.

The poll was conducted on July 19- 20, 2014, among 1,600 people from 130 communities in 42 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4 percent.
