MOSCOW, July 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, believes that the recent US allegations accusing Russia of shelling the Ukrainian territory are absolutely groundless.

According to the Deputy Head of the State Duma Defense Committee, Frants Klintsevich, the United Stated “is distorting obvious facts.”

Klintsevich stressed that satellite images are not enough to prove that Russian forces were firing artillery across the border with Ukraine.

“The US talks are simply groundless,” the State Duma member concluded adding that he has no information on the alleged attacks against Ukraine from the Russian territory.

On Sunday, the US Department of State circulated intelligence data supposedly confirming its prior claims of Russia shelling the Ukrainian territory, as well as Washington’s firm conviction that Russia is supplying heavy artillery to the independence forces.

The unveiled data is a collection of four satellite images dated July 20-26.

Earlier this week, US Department of State spokesperson Marie Harf claimed that Washington had evidence that Russia had launched artillery attacks against Ukrainian military positions across the border.

Earlier Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry said that 18 international inspection teams that visited Russia’s border areas with Ukraine over the past four month revealed no violations or undeclared military activity on the part of Russia.

Moscow has repeatedly denied any involvement in Ukraine’s internal conflict with the Russian Foreign Ministry describing all the claims targeting the country as “far-fetched insinuations.”
