“At the moment, there are 10 people in our hospital. A patient in extremely grave condition died today. Another remains in an intensive care unit in serious but stable condition, nine people are in trauma and surgery departments in moderately severe condition," said Avtandil Mamvelidze, the deputy chief of the capital’s Hospital Number 31.
The death brings the total death count to 23. A medical source told RIA Novosti on Tuesday evening that the 22nd victim had succumbed to his injuries. The emergencies ministry confirmed the information early on Wednesday.
Also on Wednesday, the Russian Investigative Committee detained rail engineer Valery Bashkatov and his aide, Yury Gordov, over the deadly accident.
The train may have derailed due to the incorrect installation of a cable that snapped in a rail junction switch.
Some 158 people were injured in the accident that occurred during morning rush hour, 146 of them were taken to local hospitals.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
