Over 12,100 people fled eastern Ukraine to Russia’s Rostov Region in the past 24 hours, Russia’s Children's Rights Ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said Friday.

MOSCOW, June 6 (RIA Novosti) - Over 12,100 people fled eastern Ukraine to Russia’s Rostov Region in the past 24 hours, Russia’s Children's Rights Ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said Friday.

"According to the best available data 12,181 people have fled Ukraine to Rostov over the past 24 hours," Astakhov wrote on his Instagram page, adding that there were 489 children among the refugees.

On Thursday, Astakhov reported that more than 8,300 Ukrainians have crossed the Russian boarder.

Starting in mid-April, the Kiev authorities have been conducting a special military operation in the east of Ukraine to suppress the pro-independence movement.

On Monday, Russia circulated a draft resolution on Ukrainian humanitarian corridors to the 14 other members of the UN Security Council, demanding Kiev put an end to the ongoing military operation and create humanitarian corridors to allow the civilian population to leave.
