In the future Russian and Chinese global navigation systems could become strong competitors to top global navigation systems, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said at the “Tekhnoprom” forum in Novosibirsk.

NOVOSIBIRSK, June 6 (RIA Novosti) - In the future Russian and Chinese global navigation systems could become strong competitors to top global navigation systems, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said at the “Tekhnoprom” forum in Novosibirsk.

“We see a strong basis for cooperation between Russian global navigation system GLONASS and the Chinese navigation system, as our system is more focused on northern latitudes and the Chinese, on southern ones,” Rogozin said.

“By complementing each other we will create the largest and the strongest competitor for any navigation system,” the deputy prime minister added.

Rogozin noted that the market for navigation services would not bear NATO-imposed constraints and that standards must be agreed upon in conjunction with Russia and China.

During the visit of the Russian delegation to China on May 19, Rogozin and one of China’s four vice premiers, Wang Yang, signed a protocol establishing a high-level group for control over the fulfillment of strategic economic cooperation projects. The strategic projects include cooperation in space and the space navigation market, airplane and helicopter construction, as well as building bilateral border and transport infrastructure.

GLONASS is the only system in the world that now provides an alternative to Global Positioning System (GPS), with global coverage and comparable precision.

Russia’s full-scale plan for GLONASS is to build 50 stations in several dozen countries across the globe. Its accuracy is expected to be refined to within three feet when used inside Russia by the end of the year.
