Confirmation that Russia has plans to claim any part of Ukraine is propaganda and the comparison with the situation with Crimea is inappropriate, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Tuesday.

MOSCOW, May 20 (RIA Novosti) - Confirmation that Russia has plans to claim any part of Ukraine is propaganda and the comparison with the situation with Crimea is inappropriate, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Tuesday.

“In regard to the type of hypotheses that Russia would like get some extra land is nothing more than propaganda. I don’t even want to comment on that. The most important thing is to calm the situation within Ukraine. We see what’s going on there, which is basically a civil war, that’s what we should be thinking about,” Medvedev said during an an interview with Bloomberg TV.

Western countries that did not acknowledge Russia’s reunification with Crimea, a former republic within Ukraine that held a referendum on separation in March, accuse Moscow of destabilizing situation in the neighboring country in order to claim more territories in mainly Russian-speaking southeast of Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Ministry have repeatedly denied the accusations saying that Western partners should not compare Crimea, that has been historically part of Russia, and other regions of Ukraine, which recently held referendums on greater autonomy.

The Kremlin earlier said it respected the will of the people in Ukraine’s southeast and urged the regime in Kiev as well the US and EU to do the same.
