Russia's actions have disrupted the plans the West had for regime change in Ukraine, the head of the foreign affairs committee in Russia’s lower house of parliament said Thursday.

MOSCOW, April 24 (RIA Novosti) – Russia's actions have disrupted the plans the West had for regime change in Ukraine, the head of the foreign affairs committee in Russia’s lower house of parliament said Thursday.

"Russia's actions, from what I see, have violated the logic of the regime change, because the plan was to replace President Yanukovych with a pro-Western government, which would then quickly organize some elections, aiming to get external legitimacy and begin Ukraine's active rapprochement with the European and Euro-Atlantic structures," Alexei Pushkov said Thursday at a press conference at the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.

"This is why Russia is now the subject of fierce criticism from the West," Pushkov added.

"Please note that such countries as China, India, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Egypt, South Africa and so on, rarely criticize Russia, all the criticism comes exclusively from Europe, the US and Canada," he said.

In February, the Ukrainian parliament backed by far-right movements ousted President Viktor Yanukovych and scheduled an early presidential election for May 25. Moscow has described the uprising in Kiev as an illegitimate fascist coup and a military seizure of power, which resulted in it taking steps to protect ethnic Russians in Ukraine, including the reunification with Crimea.

The EU, US and Canada last month imposed targeted sanctions, including asset freezes and visa bans, on a number of senior Russian officials and businessmen whom the West accuses of involvement in Crimea's reunification with Russia. A number of Western officials have since been calling for even tougher sanctions on Russia.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that talking in the language of sanctions is “inappropriate and counterproductive” and warned its Western partners about the “boomerang effect” that sanctions would have.
