GORKI, February 11 (RIA Novosti) – Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Tuesday that collaboration with US-based multinational General Electric could help Russia improve energy efficiency, which he says is quite low.

General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt told Medvedev on Tuesday that this summer the company plans to start production of gas turbines at its new plant in Rybinsk, in the Volga region.

“The prospects of cooperation [with General Electric] appear to be good, especially taking into account that the issue of the Russian economy’s energy efficiency is of crucial importance to us. Unfortunately, it is currently below the desired level,” Medvedev told Immelt.

In 2011, Russian power company Inter RAO, General Electric and state corporation Rostec have established a joint venture to manufacture, sell and service highly efficient gas turbines. For these purposes, the construction of a new plant in Rybinsk began in 2012.
