Russian police have detained six people suspected of involvement in a recent deadly car bombing in Russia’s restive North Caucasus, investigators said Friday.

MOSCOW, January 10 (RIA Novosti) – Russian police have detained six people suspected of involvement in a recent deadly car bombing in Russia’s restive North Caucasus, investigators said Friday.

Three people were killed when a car exploded in front of a traffic police building in the southern city of Pyatigorsk on December 27. The power of the blast was equivalent to 50 kilograms of TNT.

A statement released by the National Antiterrorism Committee said all six suspects had admitted involvement in the attack.

“The prompt detention of the suspects has prevented another terrorist act,” the statement said without providing further details.

Two days after the Pyatigorsk blast two suicide bombings in less than 24 hours in the southern city of Volgograd killed a combined total of 34 people and injured many more.

Both cities are located in and near the North Caucasus, a volatile multiethnic region that suffers frequent attacks on officials, police and civilians by local Islamist militant groups.
