VOLGOGRAD, January 3 (RIA Novosti) – Two more people injured by devastating back-to-back suicide bombings in Russia’s southern city of Volgograd earlier this week have been hospitalized, a regional official said, bringing the number of wounded in local clinics to 46.
The victims were receiving outpatient care but were hospitalized after their conditions worsened, the health ministry official said Thursday evening.
Eighteen more victims are being treated in Moscow clinics after being airlifted from Volgograd.
Suicide bombers blew up a train station and a trolleybus crowded with morning commuters within 24 hours of each other on December 29 and 30, killing a total of 34 people and injuring 64 more.
The attacks follow just two months after another terrorist strike in Volgograd in October, when a bomb carried by a young woman from the southern republic of Dagestan went off while she was traveling on a commuter bus.
Investigators have not named any suspects in the latest bombings, though they said they are testing the remains of the suspected bombers for DNA.
Volgograd, a city of around one million, is a major transportation hub in the south, located about 430 miles (690 kilometers) from Sochi, which is due to host the 2014 Winter Olympics starting next month.
