MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s share in worldwide spam-email production fell from 3.2 percent to 2.6 percent in the second quarter of this year, moving the country from seventh to ninth place among the world’s biggest spammers, a Russian computer-security firm said.

China remains the world’s largest spammer with a share of 23.1 percent, followed up by the United States (16.8 percent) and South Korea (12.6 percent), according to Kaspersky Lab, cited in a report by Digit.ru on Tuesday.

Russia receives spam mainly from Taiwan (12.2 percent), Vietnam (9.4 percent) and Ukraine (9 percent), Kaspersky Lab was quoted as saying.

Two-thirds of spam emails are short letters, smaller than a kilobyte, the firm said, adding that the share of letters with malware increased from 1 percent of all email traffic in the first quarter to 2.3 percent in the second.

However, Kaspersky Lab’s figures do not compare to recent finding by The Spamhaus Project, an international nonprofit that tracks spam operations and lobbies governments for effective anti-spam legislation, its website says.

According to Spamhaus, as of August 6, Russia ranked third among countries producing and exporting spam, after the United States and China. Russia was followed by Ukraine, the organization said.
