Russia will scuttle any UN Security Council resolution that could be interpreted as allowing military action against Iran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday.

“As the Libyan experience has shown, sadly, a military scenario is possible,” he said in an interview with the daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta when asked whether Israel or the United States could start military operations in Iran.

Russia will therefore exercise an extremely cautious approach at the UN Security Council.

“We won’t allow any more such disingenuous interpretations. We will see to it that no resolution is open to interpretation like the one on Libya,” he said.

The West, led by the United States, suspects Iran of pursuing a secret nuclear weapons program, but the Islamic Republic says it needs nuclear power solely for electricity generation.

There is “absolutely no evidence” that Iran has decided to include a military component in its nuclear program, Lavrov said.

Mr Lavrov meant to say Iran will be supported by Russia, until the price is right.

There is a good reason Russia does not have many friends, only those that have to tolerate Russia.

Supporting sanctions against Iran to boost Russia's oil and gas exports is not just short-sighted by stupid. And that is what Russia is known for.

Preventing Iran from acquiring decent defensive weapons, breaking promises on every single contract with Iran and holding out on UN resolutions only until the US throws a larger bone is what Russia is known for.

Medvedev destroyed the little respect Putin brought to Russia after the begging days of post Soviet, but perhaps Putin has lost his strength. We have not seen any major policy shift and Medvedev is still running his mouth.

US and Israel do as they please without giving a damn to what Russia thinks. But Russia keeps apologizing to the US and Israel and tries to justify its foreign policy. That's weakness.
