Russian Universities Lose Ground in World Rankings

Moscow State University and St. Petersburg University have lost ground in the latest edition of the annual QS World University Rankings, a QS regional director said on Tuesday.

Moscow State University and St. Petersburg University have lost ground in the latest edition of the annual QS World University Rankings, a QS regional director said on Tuesday.

Moscow State University dropped to 116th from the 112th position, while St. Petersburg University, President Vladimir Putin’s alma mater, slipped two positions to 253rd place.

Meanwhile, the Far-Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok, which recently hosted the 2012 APEC summit, debuted in the rankings in 692nd place.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topped the rankings for the first time in the nine years of its publication, while Cambridge dropped to second place after two years at number one.
