Border guards of Russia’s Far Eastern region of Chukotka have rescued a Dutch adventurer, who went missing while trying to cross the Bering Strait by kayak, an FSB spokesman said on Thursday.

Last Monday Dutch national Yuri Klaver passed through the customs and border control in Russia's Provideniya seaport and set out in his kayak for Alaska. U.S. border guards, informed of Klaver’s departure in advance, told Russian border guards on Friday that the adventurer had not reached his destination point.

“A search for him was organized, and three days later he was found on a deserted stretch of the Bering Strait coast, in a state of physical and moral exhaustion,” a spokesman for the FSB regional border guards department said.

The search operation was conducted by an FSB airplane, a guard ship and a number of motor boats.

Klaver said that he was caught in a storm shortly after leaving the port and his kayak was being swept toward the open sea by a strong current, but he somehow managed to reach land. His navigation and communication equipment was out of order and he ran out of food two days before being rescued.
