Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed on Wednesday that Russia would continue its support of the NATO military operation in Afghanistan to ensure order and security in the troubled Central Asian country.
“NATO maintains a permanent presence in Afghanistan at present. We should help them. Let them keep fighting there," Putin said at a meeting with the personnel and veterans of Russia's Airborne Troops.
“That is in our interest. It's in our interest that we should have peace on our southern borders," he said.
Flooded by Afghan heroin being smuggled through former Soviet Central Asian republics, Russia has cooperated with NATO in fighting the drug business in Afghanistan for years, helping to carry out raids on drug laboratories and training anti-drug officers.
The president reiterated, though, that Russia would not send troops to take part in the military operation against Taliban fighters.
“I realize that, if something breaks out that requires the involvement of our Armed Forces and you - the paratroopers, you will be ready,” Putin said. “But it’s our job, the politicians, to prevent such events from occurring.”
Russia has also made significant contributions to support NATO ground and air cargo transit into and out of Afghanistan and recently agreed to host a NATO transit hub in Ulyanovsk to facilitate NATO withdrawal from the war-torn country by 2014.
In addition, Moscow signed a $367.5-million deal in 2011 with the U.S. Department of Defense for 21 Mi-17V5 transport/attack helicopters to expand the fleet of helicopters in service with the Afghan military.
Putin expressed concern over security in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of NATO troops from the country and urged NATO members to bring to a logical conclusion all the tasks that the Western coalition has committed to accomplish before the pullout.
“If they have made the commitment, let them follow through on it," the Russian president said.

- SirkoLAUGHABLE....!!!01:30, 02/08/2012Right!!!
God help the Russian people for their politicians are patsies..
What? NATO has brought peace on your southern borders!!! I can see that in the 'Kavkaz' and Georgia etc.
NATO has brought, peace, order and no doubt good government to Afghanistan..!! What a farcical statement!
Is everyone in the Kremlin simple minded or is there another factor at work here such as 'Amerikanski Dolari'
Duh...!!!
I seem to recall that Afghanistan was a peaceful country for years, and years under the Soviet umbrella.
Who may I ask destabilized that country by supporting Pakistani terrorists? Who did the dirty work of the U.S.? The entire plan was concocted by the CIA, the Israelis, and Mubarak of Egypt?
The Israelis provided the Russian arms for the Mujahedin which were captured from the cowardly Egyptians in the '67 war. The CIA provided the funding and planning and Mubarak and his cronies acted as Muslim go between with the Mujahedin Pakistanis. Musharraf of course provided the transit routes and safe havens in Pakistan.
What was the purpose of all of this subterfuge? One thing and one alone the destruction of Russian influence in the hub of Asia.
However, they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams for it lead to the self emulation of the first and only socialist state in world history...the Soviet Union.
...and now Putin is barking up a storm with 'excreta tauri cerebrum vincet'...'bullshit conquers brains'.
Unbelievable... Yo...! Vladimir, sell off the rest of the country or better still give it away as you did the Soviet Union and you can retire with Khrushchev's son in South Carolina. You will be very happy as an American vassal. Perhaps they will let you visit Disneyland. The Ukrainian buffoon was not allowed to go...Ha...!!!- arsanlupinOh, please! How cliche can we get???04:26, 02/08/2012It’s this kind of wild ranting, fact twisting (or inventing), and trumpeting of all the stereotypical cliché conspiracy theories that make you difficult to take seriously, even when you DO say something of some value – and sometimes you do.
However, what makes it just about impossible is the fact that you obviously have so MUCH hatred within you, that your ability to reason at all must be open to question. Your level of hatred is so high it no longer matters who or what you are angry about. It is impossible to maintain logic or reason or rational thought with emotions so completely out of control.
I will simply try to leave you with some facts. You will probably call them either “brainwashing” or “the work of the CIA/MI5/Mossad” or Zionist propaganda. But I can see through your hackneyed accusations and vitriolic rants – and I’m sure I’m not alone.
I’m amazed you didn’t accuse The West/NATO/USA/CIA of fomenting the constant state of war that existed in Afghanistan the entire time the Red Army occupied it. Everyone now knows that the CIA was supplying arms and training to the mujahedeen; where else would a band of central Asian rebels acquire top of the line American anti-air missiles? Hell – it was an open secret even at the time. It was “low-hanging fruit” but you passed it by.
Oops …
But maybe it’s because your attempt to describe Afghanistan as “peaceful” would be revealed to all for the clumsy lie it really is? Or perhaps because others would wonder: “If Afghanistan was so bloody peaceful, why did the Soviet Union see fit to send in 12 divisions of their military?” Once asked, we would find out that the Marxist PDPA who didn’t like a populist government overthrew it and executed the first family a la Romanovs, then imposed Marxist beliefs into law, most of which honked off the Muslim populace, who promptly revolted. The situation wasn’t helped by the communist faction “Settem-e- Melli” kidnapping the US ambassador to Afghanistan Adolf Dubs. The abysmal bungling of the “rescue mission” by Afghan forces led by KGB advisor Sergei Batrukihn that caused the ambassador’s death only cemented the enmity of the USA.
Oops …
We all already know the result of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. I’ll let others tell you how the vaunted Tsar Vova I was a lowly head of the Committee for External relations of the St. Petersburg Mayor’s office during the disintegration of the USSR. He was too busy embezzling $93 million in metals in exchange for foreign food that never arrived. I wonder – Swiss bank account? Or Cayman Islands?
Oops …
Bottom line: you really need to put your psychotic tendencies on a short leash, and try to speak quietly and dispassionately. It would be a nice change of pace. You are capable of that …
… aren’t you?
- lmPutin just dont get it!13:04, 02/08/2012let us see if your words don't come back to hunt you in the future because the West and NATO always deceives Russian and will never stop until Russia does not exist as one state but many states with different names.
That is in our interest. It's in our interest that we should have peace on our southern borders," he said.- arsanlupinPerhaps - I partially agree with you ...03:47, 03/08/2012Sorry, but I must disagree with you on a few things:
I agree: NATO deceived Russia several times, and sometimes they continue to try. Stupid! Old habits die hard – on both sides. That doesn’t make it right, and I’ve always believed that Russia deserves a lot more respect from The West. But it also doesn’t mean that it “always” is happening. Most Westerners do NOT look at Russians as “the enemy” – just the opposite. The few American politicians that say it are merely posturing for their own conservative constituents. For the sake of the entire world, may both depart the world soon!
I disagree: The West and NATO do NOT want Russia to fragment and separate –that would cause chaos and anarchy, and put the entire world at risk. That’s the last thing they want. As they say in the West “They’re crazy – NOT stupid!” They are very happy the Soviet Union collapsed under its own internal weaknesses; they felt the USSR was far too aggressive worldwide. They are even happier it happened without bloodshed. When that happened, all in The West hoped for stronger ties and more friendship, now that the Cold War was over. Of course, this was rather naïve in some regards.
I disagree: Russia’s foreign policy really is thoughtful, rational, reasoning, and analytical. They avoid the irrational “knee-jerk” reactions that make Western governments do such stupid things. They are biding their time, gathering intel, and waiting for the most opportune time to step in. I wish The West were that smart – the world would be a better place.
I agree: Russia MUST be treated with more respect. The issues in Iran and Syria make that plain. Russia would be an invaluable ally to Europe and North America, but only when Russia is treated as the equal it MUST! Because everyone seems to have forgotten about the rest of Asia, and two countries with 1+ billion people each, both of which are expanding and modernizing their military at an alarming pace. At the same time The West is scaling back military spending … and China smells the approaching power vacuum. Did you notice China’s recent actions in the South China Sea?
As for Afghanistan, the history of that thrice-accursed hellhole is well known to all – 10 years of Russian occupation, 10 years of Taliban rule, then 10 years of NATO occupation, and it’s STILL a mess! Both Medvedev and Putin told Bush Jr. and Obama “you’re welcome to that hellhole – I hope you do better than we did!” The responses were less than enthusiastic, I assure you!
Yes – I might be wrong on some details. I pray I am, regarding China’s future intentions. But I doubt it. Unlike some here, I try to analyze what I can see, and I try to avoid histrionics and name-calling. I also admit I could be wrong. But after 40 years as an analyst, I wouldn’t bet on it.
