Two police officers were injured on Saturday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of Ingushetia, a spokesman for the republic’s interior ministry said.

“A homemade explosive device, planted on the right side of a road exploded near the Muzhichi village, when a UAZ vehicle of Ingushetia’s Interior Ministry was passing by,” the spokesman said.

The injured officers were taken to the nearest hospital. Doctors say they are in stable condition.

The Russian authorities have moved to improve the poor economic conditions in the North Caucasus republics and curb unemployment, which are considered to be the main factors driving local residents to join militant groups.

The troubled region sees frequent attacks on law enforcement officers and government officials as Moscow continues to battle an Islamist insurgency there.
